A brand to trust — We are honored that Susan G. Komen for the Cure® ranked number one in a recent Harris Interactive poll as the most valued non-profit brand and the charity people are most likely to donate money to. Additionally, Komen for the Cure ranked second on the 2010 list of the nation’s most trusted charities. Thank you to all who help us daily in the fight to end breast cancer!
Seventy-five percent (75%) of all money raised in Central Georgia is used by our Affiliate to fund a community grants program. These grants provide funding to local nonprofits for breast cancer specific education, prevention, screening, and treatment programs. The remaining twenty-five percent (25%) is donated to National Susan G. Komen for the Cure to help fund and support national breast cancer research studies and clinical trials.
Since 2002, our Affiliate has provided our local community with more than $1.2 Million. In 2011, we reached a milestone when we funded our 100th community grant. A total of $163,500 was granted during the 2011-2012 Community Grants cycle. These funds help support vital education, screening, and treatment programs in our service area. This year, 73% of funds are for screening/treatment programs, 21% are for education and patient navigation programs, and 6% are for follow-up care and survivorship programs.
The funding priorities for the 2012-2013 Community Grants Program are listed below.
Drawing from outcome-based information from the Community Profile, and other local and national studies, the Central Georgia Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® has identified the following programmatic priorities and priority populations for the 2012-2013 Community Grants Program:
1. Programs that provide free and/or low-cost breast screening, diagnostics, and/or treatment and related patient services and support for underserved women.
2. Programs that provide assistance with navigating the health care system and ensure that women are aware of how to access needed services along the full spectrum of the continuum of care*.
3. Programs that utilize evidence-based practices to effectively increase health literacy and awareness of available services and work to dispel myths, break down cultural and/or language barriers, and empower women to become their own advocates.
4. Programs that increase access to services, reduce and/or eliminate barriers, address service gaps, and increase the overall ease of navigating the continuum of care, especially for women residing in Crawford, Jones, Twiggs, or Monroe County.
5. Programs that focus on strengthening and building collaborative efforts between community, government, and medical institutions across counties as well as leveraging funds to ensure that community-wide programs are effectively providing free services without duplication of programs.
6. Programs addressing the target populations and counties:
- Medically underserved women
- Uninsured and underinsured women
- African American and Hispanic women
- Crawford, Jones, Monroe, and Twiggs
7. Innovative and non-duplicative programs that provide services to target populations and target counties and address one or more Affiliate priorities will be given preference for funding.
